Mrs Merriam, sister of J.S. Hitchcock, had made her home here for several years. Although a native of Iowa, she had lived in California prior to coming to Clarinda. She was a member of the United Presbyterian church.
Surviving besides her brother here are a daughter-in-law, Mrs Howard Merriam of Long Beach, Calif; a grandson, Capt Kludas Merriam of Tokyo, Japan, and a granddaughter, Florence Merriam of Washington, D.C.

Elnora Nancy Hitchcock, daughter of Leonard and Arvilla Hitchcock, was born Oct 17, 1867, in Monticello, Jones county, Ia, and died in the Clarinda Municipal hospital, Oct 2, 1951.
At an early age she became a member of the Scotch Grove, Ia, United Presbyterian church. She was educated in Monmouth, Ill, and taught for several years in the Jones county schools.
After marriage to Frank F. Merriam in 1889, she moved to Hopkinton. In and thereafter resided in Des Moines and California. She has always worked actively in the United Presbyterian church, and at the time of her death, was a member of the local church. For 28 years she was an officer in the California State Girls school.
Preceding her in death were three brothers, J. Howard, Clyde, and Clair Hitchcock, three sisters Laura, Blanche and Mary and her only son, Howard Merriam.
Those surviving include her brother, Scott Hitchcock of Clarinda, two grandchildren, Capt Kludas Merriam of Tokyo, Japan and his wife Hope, and two children of Hiawatha, Kan; Florence Merriam of Washington D.C. and daughter-in-law, Hazel Merriam of Long Beach, Calif. Numerous other relatives and a host of friends also survive.
Funeral services were conducted from the United Presbyterian church at 1:30 pm Thursday, Oct 4, 1951, with the Rev C.E. Hawthorne officiating. Mrs R.W. Huddle accompanied the soloist, Jessie Skiles Swanson, at the organ. Flower bearers were Agnes Irwin and Mrs Oral Williams. Casket bearers were Lee Johnson, R.W. Huddle, W.A.
