U.S. Congressman. He attended the University of Virginia and during the Civil War, he served in Company E, 3rd Virginia Cavalry, Confederate Army. After the war, he graduated from the law department of Washington and Lee University, in 1867, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law at the Nottoway County Court House, Virginia. He was prosecuting attorney for Nottoway County, (1870-83). In 1891, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-second and Fifty-third Congresses, serving until 1895. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he retired to his plantation and engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death at age 68.
