The son of Thomas Freeman Epes and Jacqueline Segar Hardaway Epes enlisted with Company E of the 3rd Virginia Cavalry in September of 1863 at Fredericksburg. On April 16th 1865 he was captured after his unit was cut off from Lee's Army that surrendered. His home, Oakwood, built in 1860, stands as an excellent example of the antebellum Italianate style. The bricks were made on the property.
