U.S. Senator. He graduated from Evansville College in 1940 and served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy (1942-46), during World War II. After the war, he graduated from the Indiana University Law School in 1948, was admitted to the bar and commenced the practice of law in Evansville, Indiana. He was deputy prosecuting attorney of Vandenberg County, (1950-51) and Mayor of Evansville, (1956-58). In 1958 he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until 1977. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he served as chairman of the Committee on Veterans Affairs. In 2009, the JFK Club of Indiana, awarded the John F. Kennedy Profiles in Courage Posthumous Award to Senator Vance Hartke.
