Her older brother, Christoffer Jönsson, had previously changed his name to John Christopher after arriving in America, and so all John's siblings who followed used Christopher as their new surname. It is not known why Pella changed her first name to Ella. She left Sweden on 3 May 1881 and arrived in New York on 2 Jun 1881, aboard the "SS Marathon."
