US Congressman. Born in Waterville, New York, he moved with his parents to Michigan, graduated from Michigan University in 1847, studied law in Detroit and was admitted to the bar in 1853. There he established the Michigan Car Company of Detroit in 1862 and later established the Detroit Car Wheel Company. During the Civil War, he was appointed the first provost marshal for the State of Michigan by President Lincoln in 1862, with the rank of Captain of Cavalry. He resigned in 1864 and engaged in several large manufacturing enterprises. In 1879, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-sixth Congress, serving until 1881. He died at age 60 in Detroit, Michigan.
