"H. R. Newberry Dies in England, Detroit Man, Formerly in Diplomatic Service, Expires Suddenly in Dover. Cablegram Conveys Sad News from Abroad. Had Been Away 20 Years and Was last Here 14 Years Ago. Great Social Favorite.

Harrie Robinson Newberry is dead in Dover, Eng. A cablegram to that effect having been received yesterday morning by Mrs. Newberry. The cable contained no details of Mr. Newberry's death. There was just the announcement that he had expired suddenly. Mr. Newberry had been in poor health for the last two years and had been in Dover to receive the benefit of the sea breezes. A letter to Mrs. Newberry from him recently was written in a very cheerful vein, and it was thought that he was well on the road to recovery. Consequently, the news of his death comes as a great shock to the widow and relatives. Miss Gladys Newberry, the only child, is at present, studying music, in one of the German musical centers. Miss Newberry is now enroute to Dover and will accompany the body to the United States. Mr. Newberry's body will be brought to Detroit for interment.

In Spain and Turkey. Mr. Newberry was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Newberry and the only son of Mrs. Harriet Newell Robinson Newberry, who died soon after his birth. He was a half-brother of Truman H. Newberry. Through his services in the diplomatic corps, Mr. Newberry will be best remembered. Save for a few short visits to his family in Detroit, he had been abroad for 20 years, a great part of that time having been spent in the service. His last post was in Constantinople. Previous to that, he served as charge d'affaires in Madrid and acted in that capacity when Senator Palmer was ambassador to Spain. Following his retirement from the diplomatic service. Mr. and Mrs. Newberry went to Paris, where Mr. Newberry was engaged with the firm of Nagelmacher & Co., manufacturers of sleeping cars. Failing health finally caused his retirement from active business. Mr. Newberry was 52 years old and was still a young man when he left Detroit for his work on foreign fields.

Loved Outdoor Life. Socially Mr. Newberry was a great favorite. He was a man of brilliant attainments and was of a genial disposition. In this, he followed in the footsteps of his mother, who at one time sang in the choir of the Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian church. He was a great admirer of outdoor sports, shooting being his favorite pastime. He established the first houseboat at the St. Clair Flats and was an enthusiastic duck hunter. Newberry's last visit to Detroit, was made 14 years ago." -- Detroit Free Press, 20 Sep 1909 edition, pg 1. Transcription provided by JFH, member # 51149064.
