Mittie's father, Joseph Stephens, built a steamboat the Mittie B STEPHENS, in Madison, Indiana in 1863 named after her. Joseph was one of three owners of the steamboat. Joseph commissioned an artist in New York to paint her portray with the steamboat bearing her name in the background on the Missouri River. The steamboat began her maiden voyage Sunday, May 22, 1863. On February 5, 1869 was her final voyage leaving New Orleans for Shreveport, Louisiana, arriving February 11, 1869. The Mittie Stephens left navigating the Bayou and Caddo Lake. Around midnight, smoke was smelled and the panic began. It caught fire and sank February 12, 1869 and 64 men, women, and children perished.
Old timers on the river say the Mittie Stephens was "doomed" from the beginning. Boats whose names began with the letter M, the 13th letter of the alphabet were considered Unlucky
