William attended the Washington and Lee College at Lexington, Virginia, for 3 years and then returned home take charge of the affairs of the Missouri Pacific Railroad, of which his father was receiver. In 1876,he became cashier of the Central National Bank , of Boonville.
He married Virginia Thomson on June 23, 1880 in Boonville , Missouri and they had six kids Martha, Rilye, Mariee, Maria, William JR and Joseph

2. Rilye McPherson Stephens (1884-1957) Rilye married Arthur Wesley Nelson on March 25,1903 in Boonville, Missouri. They had two children , Rilye N. Semple and Arthur Nelson.
3. Maria Yvonn Stephens (1889-1921) Maria passed away in St Louis, Missouri, in a private caregiver home. She needed 24 hours nursing care since birth. She never married.
4. Mariee Yvonne Stephens (1890-1970) She was named after her sister Maria Yvonn, Her parents did not know when Maria would passed away. The only different are the first names, Maria and Mariee. She married Arthur Wesley Nelson.
5. William Speed Stephens born on Dec 25, 1891 and died on Jan 30, 1892 . He was just one month old.
