A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Perry County September 18, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 26 as a private with Co. I, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry (162nd Pa), and quickly promoted to 2nd sergeant. Within days he fell ill and admitted to Carver U.S. Hospital before transferring to Armory Square U.S. hospitals (both facilities located in Washington DC). He discharged the service by surgeon's certificate February 23, 1863, by reason of "chronic laryngitis."
He became a lawyer after the war.
