The son of Abraham Gable & Mary (Cauffman) Long, in 1860 he was a farmer living in Greenwood Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall and had black hair and dark eyes. He married Flora A. Grubb May 25, 1864, and fathered Clarence (b. @1863), Irvin N. (b. @1867), and Frank (b. @1869). The second two children were born in Missouri.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Perry County September 16, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 26 as a private with Co. I, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry (162nd Pa). He was promoted to corporal November 1, 1863, and to sergeant March 11, 1865, and honorably discharged with his company June 16, 1865, at Cloud Mills, Virginia.

Flora died in 1879, and he married Julia A. Lamb January 8, 1883, in DeKalb, Missouri, fathering Manley W. (b. 11/??/83), Chester (b. 07/??/86), Grace A. (b. 09/??/88), Ivan (b. 08/??/91), Ruth E. (b. 12/??/92), Melvin (b. @1894), and Ardith G. (b. 07/??/97).
