US Congressman. He served 10 consecutive terms (1797 to 1816) in the US House of Representatives, representing North Carolina's 4th and 8th Districts and as an At-Large delegate. The Maryland-born Stanford trained as a schoolteacher and around 1793 moved to North Carolina, where he established an academy. An early Republican, he soon ventured into politics and proved popular enough to win election to Congress in 1796, despite his short residency in his adopted state. During the Thirteenth Congress he was Chairman of the Committee on Revisal and Unfinished Business. At the time of his death, from erysipelas at 49, he was the oldest member of the US House. His grandson was US Senator William Robert Webb.
