U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. Beginning his career as a civil engineer in New York City, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Cook County, Illinois, in 1837. Entering politics, he was Illinois Attorney General (1842-46), then resettled to San Francisco and was Attorney General of California (1850-51). In 1853, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-third Congress, serving until 1855. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate, serving 1861-67. Not a candidate for reelection, he retired to his home in Albany, New York, until his death.
