U.S. Senator. He graduated from the Louisiana State University, in 1896 and taught in the public schools in the St. Martin Parishes, (1896-98). During the Spanish-American War, he served as a Captain in the U.S. Army. After the war, he served as an assistant secretary on the Taft Commission in the Philippine Islands, (1899-1900). Returning to America, he graduated from the law department of Tulane University, in 1901, was admitted to the bar and opened a legal practice in New Iberia, Louisiana. He was prosecuting attorney for the nineteenth district of Louisiana, (1903-08). In 1920, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until 1933. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his law practice until his death at age 59.
