US Congressman. Served in the United States Army during World War II (1939-1945). Elected to represent Mississippi's 3rd, 4th and 7th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1947 to 1968. Also served as a Delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1948 and 1960 and was Mississippi Governor from 1968 to 1972.
