US Congressman and Senator. A physician, he served during the Revolutionary War as a Surgeon in the Pennsylvania Militia. He was elected as a Democratic-Republican to represent two different Pennsylvania Congressional Districts in the United States House of Representatives, first representing the 2nd District from 1799 to 1801, then the 1st District from 1803 to 1806. He was later elected as a Democratic-Republican Senator from Pennsylvania to the United States Senate, filling the vacancy left by the resignation of Senator Samuel Maclay. He served his term from 1809 until he resigned in 1814 to accept the office of Postmaster General of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Originally interred in the churchyard of the Saint John's Evangelical Lutheran Church on 6th and Race Streets, he was removed to Laurel Hill Cemetery in 1924 with the rest of the churchyard's interments when the church was demolished to make way for the Benjamin Franklin Bridge.
