US Senator. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, he graduated from the University of Utah in 1906 and served as a missionary of the Church of Latter Day Saints in Japan, (1907-12). He served as a Major in the Inspector General's department, Utah National Guard and United States Reserves (1917-26), plus a professor of political science at the University of Utah (1924-33). On March 4, 1933, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate and served until 1951. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed high commissioner of United States trust territories of the Pacific and served until his death at age 69 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
