Worden was graduated from Center College in Danville, Kentucky in 1883, then from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago in 1886. He was ordained to Presbyterian ministry by the Presbytery of Ebenezer on April 23, 1887. He served as pastor in Presbyterian congregations in Kentucky and Indiana 18870-1890. He then became pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Mount Pleasant, Iowa (1891-1906). He was the Stated Clerk of the Presbytery of Iowa.
