Walter Evans Edge (1873-1956) - Find a Grave Memorial

New Jersey Governor, U.S. Senator. At age seventeen he moved to New Jersey, was employed in a printing office in Atlantic City, (1890-94) and went on to be owner-publisher of the Atlantic Review newspaper. He was journal clerk of the New Jersey State Senate, (1897-99) and served as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, during the Spanish-American War. Entering politics, he was secretary of the New Jersey State Senate, (1901-04) a member of the New Jersey State House of Assembly in 1910 and a member of the New Jersey State Senate, (1911-16). In 1917, he was elected as a Republican, the 36th New Jersey Governor, serving until 1919 and then was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving (1919-29). He was appointed Ambassador to France by President Herbert Hoover, serving (1929-33) and again elected Governor of New Jersey, serving (1944-47). After leaving office, he was an elder statesman of the New Jersey Republican party until his death at age 82.
