US Congressman, US Senator, North Carolina Governor. Elected to represent North Carolina's 9th District in the United States House of Representatives to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Congressman Edwin Y. Webb, serving from 1919 to 1921. Served as Governor of North Carolina from 1937 to 1941. Elected as a Senator from North Carolina to the United States Senate, serving from 1945 until his death in office in 1954.
