Alexander and Fannie separated, though never divorced, when he had become interested in another woman and moved to California. In 1896 he moved back to Salt Lake, and resided as a boarder with Julian Riley, until failing health caused him to move in with his youngest son Fred, where he died July 31, 1911. His funeral service was held by the Masons.
