"Deseret News" carried the following obituary:
"Death Calls Widow of Original Pioneer
"Pleasant Grove, Feb 7 – Mary Ann Sutherland Gleason, widow of John S. Gleason, died at her home her last night. She had been gradually failing in strength for a number of years due to her advanced age until death came peacefully as the result of natural infirmities.
"Mrs. Gleason was born April 7, 1834, in London. Her parents moved to Newcastle when she was a child and for many years the Sutherland home was open to the "Mormon" elders. She was baptized when she was 13 years old and was staunch in her defense of the gospel as a girl and as a young woman. Among the elders who found hospitality at her father's home was John S. Gleason, one of the pioneers who came to the Salt Lake valley in the original band of July 24, 1847. While he was on a mission to England Miss Sutherland came to Utah in 1862, and three years later, John S. Gleason having returned, she was married to him in the Endowment house, in 1865. She lived during the early part of her married life in Farmington, moving to Pleasant Grove, where her husband had obtained property, about 1875. Here with her, John S. Gleason made his home and here died in 1904. His widow has lived since with her children, loved and respected by all who knew her, for her sweet, benign and loving temperament. Of her own children three are living: Thomas H. Gleason, of Pleasant Grove; Eliza Broomhead, of Murray; and Miss Mary Gleason, who for years has tenderly cared for her mother. She reared to manhood also an adopted son, a nephew, Stanley Dallin, who now lives in Los Angeles, Cal.
