I believe Alfred was born in St. Martin's, Middlesex, England, on Dec 30, 1823 - the son of Dr. Joseph and Lucy Ralph. The family immigrated in 1831, his youngest sister being born at sea. His older brother, also Dr. Joseph Ralph, had a son Julian Ralph who was a well-known journalist/newspaperman. Julian's son, Lester Ralph, was a successful artist/magazine illustrator. There are Civil War letters written by Alfred's brother-in-law that mentions him and his wife Mary E. Rogers. Alfred enlisted as a private, but was a Corporal at the time of his death. He was 39 when he died on the last day of fighting at Gettysburg.
