U.S. Congressman, Indiana Governor, U.S. Senator. He graduated from Jefferson College in 1810, taught school (1810-12), studied law, admitted to the bar, moved to Madison, Indiana Territory in 1813 and practiced law. He became a printer-owner of the Western Eagle and was a member of the Indiana Territorial Legislature, (1813-14). Upon the admission of Indiana as a State, he was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Fourteenth Congress and to the next two succeeded Congresses, serving (1816-22). After leaving Congress, he was elected the 3rd Governor of Indiana, serving (1822-25) and then elected to the United States Senate, serving (1825-37). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was a trustee of Indiana University, (1829-40) and resumed the practice of law until his death.
