Civil War Union Brigadier General, US Congressman. Born in Orford, New Hampshire, he was admitted to the bar in 1841, opened a law firm and served in the state legislature. In 1858, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth and Thirty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1863. During this time of the Civil War, he help recruit the 2nd New Hampshire and was commissioned Colonel. Promoted Brigadier General in November 1862, he led a brigade at the Second Bull Run and Fredericksburg. Following Fredericksburg, he returned to Congress and after his term he was given command of the 1st Brigade of the 1st Division of the XVIII Corps which he commanded until the end of the war. After the war, he was reelected to the Thirty-ninth Congress, serving 1865 to 1867 and appointed to the United States Senate in March, 1889.
