Civil War Union Brigadier General. He graduated from West Point in 1840, served as an artillery officer in the Mexican American War and was a Captain in the 3rd US Artillery at the start of the Civil War. Appointed a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Horse Artillery Brigade in 1862, he participated in the Battle of Antietam, Fredericksburg and was promoted Brigadier General of the II Corps in November 1862. At Chancellorsville, he was wounded, taken prisoner and was exchanged in time to fight at Gettysburg in July 1863. In November 1863, he was appointed Provost Marshall of the southern district of New York and in February 1865, he rejoined the Army of the Potomac commanding the 2nd Division Artillery Reserve at Petersburg until the end of the war. After the war, he served in the 5th US Artillery at various post until his death.
