Celia (Vance) was born about 1795 in Buncombe county, North Carolina to Priscilla (Brank) Vance and David Vance of Revolutionary fame. She was also the aunt of Governor Zebulon B. Vance.

Celia married Benjamin Stringfield Brittain on 20 May 1817. They were the parents of Ann Catherine, Priscilla A., Benjamin Franklin, Marcus Lafayette, Celia D., Julius Wilson, Weldon E., and William Thomas.

Her husband served in the House of Commons from 1827-1829, and the Senate from 1832-1835. He also served in the Mexican-American War with the title of General. Celia died on May 22, 1879.
