Until 1915, John was a seaman working for Elder Dempster out of Liverpool. He appears on the crew list for the Falaba beginning in December 1914, and continued as Assistant Bedroom Steward on board the Falaba until its sinking by torpedo from a German U-boat on 28 March 1915. On 20 May 1915, John Doherty provided his testimony into the Falaba sinking. His words can be read here: https://archive.org/stream/proceedingsbefor00grea/proceedingsbefor00grea_djvu.txt
It is not known when John Doherty entered the army, but it is presumably after May 1915.
