Died at Her Home In Kalamazoo Friday Evening and Her Remains Were Brought Here Monday.
The death of Mrs. M. C. Sherwood, which had been expected for several days. occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Carrie Gilmore last Friday evening at 10:45 o'clock. Mrs. Sherwood suffered a fall four weeks before her death and had been severely ill ever since, falling rapidly during the last week. Funeral servers were held at half past two o'clock Monday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Gilmore in Kalamazoo, Rev. Walter B. Dickinson, pastor of the Frist Congregational church of Kalamazoo officiated. Later the remains were brought by a special interurban car from Kalamazoo, accompanied by the relatives, and were laid to rest in Oak Grove cemetery. Maria Williams was born in Berkshire county, Massachusetts in October 1829. During her girlhood she moved from there with her parents, to Monroe county, N. Y. here she was married to Cyrus G. Sherwood and later they came to Michigan to make their home, as did several of their relatives. They lived on a farm southwest of Galesburg, which is still known as the Sherwood farm, being owned by their son, H. H. Sherwood. Her husband died to 1877, seven years later she removed to Kalamazoo and has made her home in that city since. But she left a large circle of friends in Galesburg and has not only kept their friendship, but has formed new friendships here during her frequent visits here. She was a woman of kindly disposition toward all with whom she came in contact. She was for years an active worker in the Congregational church of this place and later In the church of the same denomination in Kalamazoo. Of her six children, three survive. Mrs. T. S. Clapp and H. H. Sherwood of this place and Mrs. Carrie Gilmore of Kalamazoo. Also six grandsons and two great grandchildren survive, besides one sister, Mrs. Mary Gates of Kalamazoo, and three brothers , Rev. J. H. Williams of this place, Oreb Williams of Midland and A. Williams of Maryville, Mo. The last named brother had been with her during her illness, but Rev. J.H. Williams, who is now visiting his daughter in Topeka, Kas., and O.A.
