Death of Cyrus G. Sherwood
GALESBURG, March 22d, 1875.[sic]
To the Editor of the DAILY TELEGRAPH:
Cyrus G. Sherwood, one of our most esteemed townsmen, died in his 53d year, at his home in Pavilion, this morning, of pneumonia. Mr. Sherwood, I believe, was born in Saratoga county, N. Y., but when a young man removed to Mendon, Monroe county, N. Y. In 1853 he removed to Rockville, Maryland, where he remained till the war broke out, when he came back to New York, and in the fall of 1861 came to Michigan, settling on what is now the Munsell farm, just west of Galesburg. In 1863 he sold his farm and went into the hardware trade with his brother-in-law, L. M. Gates, Esq. Remaining in this business three years, he sold out his interest to Wm. A. Blake, Esq., of Galesburg, and bought a farm in Pavilion and gave his entire attention to its cultivation. At the time of his death he had $4,000 insurance on his life in the Michigan Mutual Insurance Company. Mr. Sherwood will be missed by a large circle of relatives and friends, and our entire community feel that in his death they have lost a most excellent citizen. He had a fine farm, and was a first class farmer.— He was a very active and most zealous Christian man, a valuable and influential member of the Congregational Church of Galesburg, having been one of its Trustees for a number of years past, and still held the office at his death. When a good man dies, we are all the losers; but to his family, his church, and the community where he has lived the loss comes with keener and deeper sorrow. This is most truly the case in the death of Cyrus G. Sherwood. A kind and loving husband and father, an esteemed and influential citizen, has departed, leaving behind him hosts of friends to lament his loss. The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock p. m. Saturday, at the Congregational Church in Galesburg. Kalamazoo Daily Telegraph March 23, 1877 page 4
