Roberta Waugh Fulbright was a
businesswoman and civic crusader
in Arkansas.

R.W.F. took charge of the
inherited, business holdings --
originally assembled by her
late-husband Jay Fulbright.
R.W.F. molded these parts into
a multi-enterprise family firm.
She emerged as an influential:
* newspaper publisher
* columnist
* bank president
* successful businesswoman
* civic leader

In 1906, the Fulbrights moved
to Fayetteville.
While her husband developed
businesses, Roberta Fulbright
tended their growing family,
along with social, and
civic activities.

Her husband died suddenly
in 1923 of apparent complications
from high blood pressure.

Roberta Fulbright found her
family's multiple holdings
threatened by legal challenges
from partners and other claimants.

Fulbright encountered opposition
from those who believed a woman
had no place in business.
She instigated the
'Fulbright Investment Company',
a firm designed to manage the
businesses and real estate.

Fulbright was the publisher of
the 'Fayetteville Daily Democrat',
later the 'Northwest Arkansas Times'.
She expressed her views and
opinions in a column titled:
"As I See It."

In the 1930s, through her newspaper,
R.W.F. took on corrupt
local politicians.

Joining forces with the
'Good Citizenship League',
Fulbright spoke for change.
By 1936, election fraud
had been eliminated.

Roberta Fulbright was influential
on the local and state level.
Her businesses, newspaper column,
and her wide circle of friends,
made her a 'respected force'
in local and state government.

Roberta Fulbright's support of
one Arkansas governor and opposition
to another governor, involved her in
a controversy. This action is credited
with putting her son,
J. William (Bill) Fulbright,
in the U.S. Senate.

She was a strong supporter of
Gov. Carl Bailey.
He was serving on the
1939 Board of Trustees
when a new Pres of the UofA died.
Bailey proposed Bill Fulbright,
(an assistant-UA
Law School professor), for the post.

R.F. was outspoken against
Homer Adkins, who defeated
Bailey in 1940.
Adkins supporters fired
Bill Fulbright, who had
become a very popular
president in 1941.

Bill Fulbright won a seat in
the U.S. House of Representatives
in 1942. After serving one term,
Bill Fulbright defeated Adkins
for the US Senate seat in 1944.
Mrs. Fulbright's revenge was
complete." Bill Fulbright went on
to a distinguished 30-year
Senate career.
