was part of the John Thomas family farm. It was used as a private burial
ground by the Thomas family until 1870, when Washington Lodge Number 1
of the Free and Accepted Masons and Lodge Number 15 of the Independent
Order of Odd Fellows bought the property for a place of interment for
lodge members and for the Fayetteville [Washington county, Arkansas]
community in general. The Masons and Odd Fellows owned and managed
Evergreen Cemetery until 1915 when they deeded the cemetery to the
Evergreen Cemetery Association. [Cemetery has been expanded from its
original four acres]
A cemetery description from 1876 letter #4, MC-49, Special Collections,
University of Arkansas written by party then in charge, John Decatur
Henry, whose 14 year old son is buried in lot 15, section 1, to wit:
"....situated just west of town [Fayetteville] and immediately
between my house and the College [now University of Arkansas] and in
sight of both. There is 4 acres in it in 4 Sections with 36 lots in each
Section with a street each way through the center and alley between Each
lot. The Lot is 20 ft square."
