Governor of South Carolina. In order to help support his family when his father died, he become a paperboy at the age of 10. He would remain in the newspaper business for much of his life, eventually publishing the 'Ninety-Six Guardian' and 'Hampton County Guardian' in South Carolina. Elected Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina in 1896, he became Governor upon the death of Governor William H. Ellerbe on June 2, 1899. Elected in his own right in 1900, he would serve until 1903, when he returned to his publishing business in Hampton, South Carolina.
