Funeral This Afternoon for Allendale Publisher; Was Ill for Long Time
Eugene Bonham McSweeney, prominent business man and farmer, passed away at the residence in Allendale this morning after an extended illness. Mr McSweeney, who was editor and publisher of The Allendale County Citizen, The Hampton County Guardian and The Jasper County Record, had been prominently connected in civic and public lie throughout the state for many years. He was 50 years of age.
Funeral services will be held at 4:30 o'clock Friday afternoon at the residence in Allendale with Dr C F Wimberly officiating. Interment will be in Hampton Cemetery.
Mr McSweeney was born in Hampton August 14, 1888, a son of the late Governor Miles McSweeney and Mrs Martha Porcher McSweeney. He lived in Hampton for many years, serving that county as a member of the House of Representatives for two terms. He moved his business offices to Allendale in 1919 and had been a resident of this town since. At the time of his death he was chairman of the county Democratic executive committee and had served in this capacity for a number of years. He had also served as chairman of the board of high school trustees for many years, until his resignation a year ago.
Mr McSweeney was a member of the Swallow Savannah Methodist Church and a member of the Masonic fraternity.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs Florence Humphries McSweeney; three children, Martha McSweeney, Betty McSweeney and Joan McSweeney, all of Allendale; four brothers, John M McSweeney, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Miles P McSweeney, Palmetto, Florida, Ned McSweeney, Hollywood, Florida; William McSweeney, Tampa, Florida, and one sister, Mrs Leonora M Elkins of Beaufort.
