Obituary, National Banner and Nashville [TN] Whig, Mon, 2 Aug 1824, pg. 3:
At his residence in this county on the 21st instant, George Wharton Esq. in the 58th year of his age. Although it is the inevitable lot of humanity that all must die, yet this awful dispensation of providence seldom occurs without producing terrible shock amongst the relations and friends of the deceased. In a very few instances, has this afflicting catastrophe been more unexpected, or tremendous in its effect upon surviving friends. The deceased had enjoyed in an unusual degree, the inestimable blessing of health, accompanied with a cheerfulness of disposition, that was scarcely interrupted by the ordinary occurrences of life. Endowed by nature with a rare genius, although his early education was imperfect, such was his insatiable thirst for knowledge, that he sought every opportunity of cultivating his mind, and before his death had acquired a fund of information, in various departments of literature, which qualified him in an eminent degree, for the enjoyment of social life. Indeed it is confidently believed that as a modem historian, he has not left his superior behind. Soon after his emigration to this state, he was invested with the office of justice of the peace, and for many years has acted as coroner in this county. In both situations, (as far as his defect in the organ of hearing would allow,) has discharged his duties with ability, and always with integrity. In the various relations of husband, parent, friend, and master, no better evidence of his worth need be adduced, than the intense anxiety manifested by wife, children, friends and servants during his illness, and their bitter anguish when death summoned him to another, and it is hoped a better world. In fine, if the most incorruptible integrity of character, united to a benevolence of disposition which alleviated the suffering and dissipated the gloom of every one to the utmost of his power, constituted the character of a good man, the subject of this brief obituary notice may emphatically be styled a good man. A good man and an Angel! Between these how thin the barrier! What divides their fate? Perhaps a moment, or perhaps a year, Or if an age, it is a moment still."
