Robert Purdy Bell was the youngest of seven children born to William Levi Bell (1851-1930) and his wife Margaret Jane Leslie (1861-1943). He was named for one of his father's best friends, Judge Robert O. Purdy of Sumter, SC.

Robert attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. He later studied at the School of Journalism at Columbia University. He served as a reporter for the Associated Press for a time, and was later associated with the Charlotte Observer newspaper.

Robert married Thelma Urquhart Towery (c. 1913-?), a daughter of Eugene S. Towery (1884-1961) and his wife Bessie Greenslade (1888-1976) who were living in Atlanta, Georgia in 1920, but later lived in Concord, NC, and they had one son, Robert Purdy Bell, Jr. Robert and Thelma lived at Concord, NC.
