John Leslie Bell was the first born son, and second of seven children born to William Levi Bell (1851-1930) and his wife Margaret Jane Leslie (1861-1943). He attended Davidson College, and was well known as a baseball pitcher in collegiate and minor league circles. He served as a Second Lieutenant in the First World War.

On 26 May 1920, John married Catherine Brandon Means, a daughter of George W. Means and his wife Lou Bickel, of Concord, NC. They had two children, John Leslie Bell, Jr., who was an officer in the US submarine corps. in WW II, and Catherine Means Bell (Mrs. Paul Nelson).

John Leslie Bell was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church. He was a merchant in Concord and Kannapolis, NC.
