Elaine was the first wife of Arkansas' 34th Governor, Sidney Sanders McMath, her high school sweetheart. She was a Stephens College and University of Arkansas alumna, receiving a BA with Honors in English from the latter in 1936. She was a member of Chi Omega sorority, senior ROTC Sponsor, and exceled in debate and theater. She accompanied Captain McMath to The Basic School, U.S. Marine Corps Base, Quantico, VA in 1940 where he resumed active duty as an infantry training officer. She gave birth to their only child, Sandy Sidney McMath, at Quantico Naval Hospital on August 23, 1941. She died there May 28, 1942 from sepsis following a contaminated D&C procedure. Elaine has three grandchildren: McKenzie Alexandra McMath Coronel (2/25/89), Savannah Gizelle McMath (9/5/90), and Ian Chase Braughton McMath (8/4/92), and two great grandchildren, Augustus Alexander McMath Coronel ("Guster") (8/25/22) and Helaina Marie Coronel ("Bunny") (11/20/23).
