Garland County Educator,

Special to the Gazette
Hot Springs, February 18 - Garnett Braughton, 54, native of Garland county and a director of rural education in the county for 24 years, died early tonight at a Hot Springs hospital. A graduate of the University of Arkansas and George Peabody College for Teachers, he was elected county superintendent in 1918, an office he held until 1934. He then served as county examiner before the office was changed to county supervisor the position he held at the time of his death. Mr. Baughton [Braughton] advanced the plan for the consolidation of small school districts into larger districts which would make it possible to provide better buildings and teachers, including in many instances a high school in which children were transported by bus. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Willie Braughton; a son, Dr. Cecil C. Braughton, Hot Springs; two daughters, Mrs. Sidney McMath, Quantico, Virginia, and Grace Ann Braughton, Hot Springs; two brothers, Monroe and Robert A. Braughton, both of Hot Springs; a sister, Mrs. R. A. Wright, Hot Springs; and a grandson. [from the Arkansas Gazette, Thursday, February 19, 1942, page 12]
