Mr. Reed Jerome died at the residence of Capt. M. P. Parsons, in East China, Wednesday, Oct. 9th, at 11 p.m. At the time of his death he was 85 years, 8 months and 15 days old.
He was a native of Pennsylvania, born in Coshoeton on the Delaware River, Jan. 24th, 1810. His father, moving to New York, in his early childhood, in 1827, Mr. Jerome came to St. Clair, which place he reached July 12th to assist his father in his mill on Pine river. As he could not work in the winter he returned to New York state but in 1828 came to Michigan to make his future home. He purchased land and built a house on the banks of the St. Clair river and in 1834 he was married to Miss Abigail Carleton and moved to his farm in East China. Four children came to brighten their home. Wirt died in his infancy, Chas, married Miss Susan Proctor, of Romeo, and died in 1864.
Mr. Jerome has held the offices of supervisor, town clerk, justice of the peace, highway commissioner and school offices. Mr. Jerome's mother died when he was quite young, he having but a faint remembrance of her. He always spoke of his second mother in the most affectionate and endearing manner; with tears in his eyes he would say, "She was such a good mother." Honoring his father and mother, truly his days have been "long upon the earth."
Mr. Jerome was a pioneer and having a splendid memory, could recall many interesting events of early days. He was a very active, industrious man until the infirmities of age compelled him to stop work. After the marriage of his son Ira, Mr. and Mrs. Jerome made their home with their devoted daughter.
His estimable wife died Sept. 12, 1884. After her death he seldom went from home only as business called him and to Detroit occasionally to visit his brothers. He would walk over to his son's every day when the weather would permit, but for one year he has been gradually failing and since August he had been confined to the house.
Of his children, two, Mrs. M. P Parsons and Mr. Ira Jerome, survive him. Two brothers, Hon. George Jerome and Ex-Gov. D. H. Jerome and one sister, Mrs. Nancy Goodson, seven grandchildren, many nephews and nieces and a large circle of friends are left to mourn his loss.
Mr. Jerome's funeral was held on Saturday afternoon from the residence of Capt. Parsons and was largely attended by neighbors and friends, Rev. J. McEldowney, of the Methodist church of St. Clair officiating. The remains were interred in the St. Clair cemetery.
the family wish to express their gratitude to the friends and neighbors and those members of the M. E. choir who so kindly assisted at the funeral.
