Months Duration: Passes Away
Breckenridge
Michael Caper, a prominent Wilkins County farmer passed away at St. Frances Hospital, at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, following an illness of two months duration.
Michael Caper was born at St. Joseph, Wisconsin on July 29, 1857 and was seventy-five years, six months and eight days of age at the time of his death. Mr. Caper made his home with his parents at St. Joseph, Wis. until he was 26 years old. At this age he was untied in marriage to Kathryn Hermes. The young couple continued to make their home in St. Joseph, for one year. They then started to North Dakota to make a home for themselves. After reaching Wahpeton, they decided to take a claim at North Bend, N.D.
By many years of hard work, requiring long hours every day continued improving their buildings and land. When they would come to Breckenridge, they would drive their team of oxen harnessed to a two-wheel cart. The one team of horses Mr. Caper owned were purchased from Mr. Frank Mikuche of Breckenridge. At Great Bend Mr. Casper and his good wife continued to raise their family of children, namely Mrs. Edward Rademaker, Los Angeles, Calif.; …(unreadable - list of children and their residence)…. and Joseph who passed away in 1901.
During 1900, Mr. Casper sold his old home and purchased a farm four mile south of Kent, where the family resided until 1910, when they moved into the village of Kent, which is where he lived until his death.
Mr. Casper was a good Christian and was one of the charter members of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Kent. He helped to build the first church erected in the village and when fire destroyed he helped to rebuild the present church. He said it was what any good citizen would do.
His one wish was that he might live until next June when he and his wife, surrounded by their children and grandchild could celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.
Two months ago when Dropsy caused him to take to his bed, one of his daughters, Mrs. Edward Rademaker, Los Angeles, Calif., hurried to his bedside. Everything that medical science could do was done for him by his widow and children. When his condition became worse he was taken to St. Frances Hospital in this city where he passed away.
He was the youngest of a family of fifteen children, and the last one of the family to pass to the great beyond.
This (Thursday) morning at 10 a.m. services were conducted at St. Mary's Church in Breckenridge with Father John Dettendorf officiating. The pall bears were old friends of the Kent vicinity. Those who served, as pallbearers were Ben Underberg, Peter Kurtz, Louis Merrick, Antonio Nordick, Nick Volz, and Andrew Neopl
Michael Casper was laid to rest in St. Mary's Cemetery in this city beside his grandchildren in the family plot.
