Paul Lamar Wells, Jr. 89, died Monday, September 18, 2006 at St. Catherine s Village in Madison. The Burial Office will be said at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home on High Street. Burial will follow in Lakewood Memorial Park. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.


Mr. Wells was born on September 7, 1917 in Boynton, Fla., the son of the late Paul Lamar Wells, Sr. and Julia Owen Wells. Mr. Wells graduated from Mississippi State University where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. After graduation, he married the former Phyllis McCool of Kosciusko and accepted a position with Dupont. He served as a construction engineer at Dupont on the Manhattan Project during World War II. In 1954, Mr. Wells moved to Jackson to make his home. He served as President of Nickles Wells Construction Company, a partnership with his longtime friend James Nickles. During his 50 years, his company built, Northminster Baptist Church, Broadmeadow United Methodist Church, First Baptist Church of Yazoo City, the Admiral Benbow Inn, the Sun and Sand Motor Lodge, and numerous dormitories at Mississippi State University and the Mississippi University for Women. His company also is responsible for the remodeling of the Mississippi State Capital and the construction of St. Catherine s Village in Madison. Mr. Wells and his partner retired in 1990.


Mr. Wells was a communicant of St. James Episcopal Church.


He is preceded in death by his wife Phyllis McCool, daughter, Mary Melissa Wells, son, Benjamin Gray Wells and brother, Hoyt R. Wells.


Survivors include; sister, Betty Wells Williams of Madison and sister-in-law, Jane McCool Coulombe and her husband John of Jackson. nieces, Marcia Williams of Jackson; Betty Wells Emison of Alamo, Tenn.; Susie Wells of Memphis; nephews, John Bell Williams, Jr. of Sonora, Calif.; Kelly Wells Williams of Columbia, S. C. and numerous great nieces and great nephews.


Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.
