Private, 4th Company, 5th Virginia Regiment, Captain Thomas Gaskin's company

Fold3 records indicate that he died on January 28, 1777; An 1808 pension record that I found for his widow (Nancy) indicates that he died in February in Wilmington Pennsylvania. I cannot find a town named Wilmington in Pennsylvania but Wilmington Delaware is not too far away; However, the Virginia 5th was not in Wilmington that early in 1777. Most likely he died of disease or wounds received during one of the many skirmishes around the Philadelphia area in the winter of 76-77. The 5th was moving north towards Wilmington and he may have been left behind and subsequently died.

George was the son of George Conway (1717-1754) and Anne Heath and he was the grandson of Col. Edwin Conway (1681-1783) and Anne Hacke of Lancaster County, VA. Col. Edwin Conway was a very influential man in the area and he was a longtime member of the House of Burgesses. He and his descendants are cousins of President George Washington and President James Madison via the Ball family.

He married Anne/Nancy Downman the daughter of Travers Downman and Grace Ball. Their two known daughters were Grace Ball Conway and Alcey Travers Conway. There is a possibility that they also had a daughter named Anne/Nancy but no proof has been found to confirm this.

They lived in the Northern Neck of Virginia - Northumberland and Lancaster Counties.
