On July 8, 1872, the Michael and Anna Putz family arrived at the port of New York aboard the S. S. Orpheus. Their ages were listed as follows: Michael 42, Anna 26, Cath 14, Johan 9, Joseph 6, and Michael 10 mos.

By the time of the 1880 census, the family was living on South Bend, Indiana. Their surname was listed as "Foots". They included Mike 50, Anna 30, Florence 19, John 17, and Joseph 13, all born in Prussia; and Frank 6 and Mary 4, born in Illinois. Anna's parents were living with them: Mike Spice 72 and his wife Magdalena 68 had been born in Russia. (In various other records, Anna's maiden name is spelled Speier, Speel, Spare, Szpejer, Schper, etc. )

The 1900 census of South Bend indicates that Mary had had 12 children of whom 6 were living. Michael 70 and Anna 50 were born in Poland. In this census (and 1910 and other records), Frank 23 and Mary 21 were listed as being born in New York. August 19, Casimir 17, Wladyslaw 14, and Stanislaus (aka Stephen)10, were listed as born in Indiana. Son Joseph Putz 34, his wife Joanna 32, and their daughter Mary 4 mos. were living next door.
