2. Laurence John East, b 29 Mar 1900 at Ludington, Mason Co MI. He died at Saugatuck, Allegan Co MI in February 1973. (W,M,Z,984u, 983v,167w)

Mr. East's tenure as educator and leader affected thousands of young lives.

"The post World War II years, the hopeful era of the 1950's and the radical change of the early 1960's all figured into the administration of L.J. East. He was a veteran of both World Wars and prior to his appointment as superintendent at ISSCS [Illinois Soldiers' and Sailors' Children's School], he served as a high school science teacher, school principal, and as superintendent of schools at Dawson and Eureka, Ill. His was the third longest tenure of all the superintendents of the Home [1948-1963], and saw perhaps the greatest number of challenges brought about by influences beyond his control. Changes in Illinois government and in the child welfare system nationwide, along with increasing numbers of emotionally disturbed and learning-disabled youth in need of services foretold some issue that would eventually spell the demise of ISSCS." - From "A Place We Called Home - History of The Illinois Soldiers' and Sailors' Children's School" - a free book available from The McLean County Genealogical Society at tmcgs.org.
