Mrs Elizabeth Snell of Avon, Twice Widowed, Attains Her 86th Birthday -- Blind, But Enjoys Her Other Senses.

AVON, May 9--Mrs Elizabeth Snell, one of the oldest residents in this section, is today observing her 86th birthday anniversary at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Charles F. Porter, on East Spring st.

Mrs Snell was born in West Bridgewater, May 9, 1814, her parents being Ruel and Nancy Dunbar, and was one of five children, two sons and three daughters. When she was a mere child of 5 years her father died, and it was not more than a year after that event when her mother again married, this time to Perez Dunbar, a brother of her father. By the latter union there were four children. At the time of her death Mrs Nancy Dunbar was then 80 years of age.

Mrs Snell acquired her education through the agency of the old district school in her native town, the building being located in that section of the town familiarly known as "Jerusalem."

Mrs Snell twice entered matrimonial life. Her first marriage was in 1834, when she became the wife of Dimon Hamilton of Maine. There was one child, a son, John Hamilton, who with his family resides on East Main st. The first husband died in June, 1840.

In January of the next year she became the wife of Elbridge Snell of West Bridgewater. By the latter union there were two children, a son, Elbridge Snell, and a daughter, Mrs Mary Porter, who both reside on East Spring st, in this town, the aged woman making her home with the latter for half a century.

Elbridge Snell died about 35 years ago, and the widow has now three brothers and one sister still living who are over or slightly under the four score mark. They include Ruel Dunbar, who is a resident of Campello; Adoniram J. Dunbar of Brockton, Lucius Dunbar of Hudson and Mrs J.B. Packard of West Bridgewater, mother of ex Alderman Fred H. Packard of Brockton.

She is able to recall incidents which occurred over 50 years ago with a remarkable precision. She sleeps well, while her appetite is very fair. The saddest feature of her life is the fact of her total blindness. It was about two years ago that her eyesight first became impaired. This difficulty increased rapidly, and as a result within a comparatively short time she became totally blind. Since that time she has passed her days in a large arm chair, being unable to even move about the house without the aid of an assistant. It is now nearly six months since she has set foot out of doors.
