Arkansas Governor. While attending Hendrix College, he left his studies and served in the U.S. Navy during World War I. After the war, he graduated from the Arkansas Teachers College in 1924, owned a drugstore in Conway, Arkansas and entered the oil business after oil was discovered on his family farm. Entering politics, he was Mayor of Camden Arkansas (1935-39) and served on the Arkansas Penitentiary Board (1941-44). In 1945, he was elected as a Democrat the 33rd Governor of Arkansas, serving until 1949. During his two terms, the Revenue Stabilization Law was enacted, the Arkansas Resources and Development Commission were formed and the Corporation and Utilities Commissions were consolidated into the Public Service Commission. Not seeking reelection, he remained active in politics until his death from a heart attack.
