After high school graduation, she began her career as a domestic worker and later worked at Herman Kiefer Hospital. In 1943 Ms. Lucas was hired at the Square D plant where she remained until the company moved to Milwaukee, WI. She then became employed at Mount Carmel Hospital in the dietary department and, because of her work ethic and skills and ability to work well with people, she was promoted to a supervisor position. Ms. Lucas retired in February 1982, after 32 years of service.
She had a long history of affiliation and commitment to faith based and social organizations. She was a member of Second Baptist Church, under the late Rev. A.A. Banks Jr., this was her home of worship for over fifty years. She eventually joined Liberty Temple Baptist Church under the late Rev. Samuel Thompson and continued as a member under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Steve Bland, Jr. Ms. Lucas was a founding member of the Duchess Social Club which began in 1945, holding the offices of President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. She also was an active member of the Prestige, Ruth Circle and Fifty Plus group.
She was highly revered as a wise, loyal, supportive, and dedicated family member and friend. Throughout her life, she has been trustworthy, reliable and responsible often called upon as a confidante by family and friends. Ms. Lucas has very strong values for family, education and work. She always tried to instill in young people to pursue an education and secure employment to become independent, often saying "You better get them books" and "if you earn a dollar always save a quarter for a rainy day."
When she was more active, Ms. Lucas enjoyed gardening, crocheting, latch hooking rugs, playing bingo and keno, traveling, shopping, sightseeing, attending the theatre, and eating at favorite restaurants and preparing tasty foods. Her homemade macaroni and cheese, pound cake and sweet potato pies were absolutely delicious.
This matriarch created a loving, secure family environment to share with her children, Adella , William (deceased), and Jean; grandchildren Clyde Jr., and Darryl - deceased, Melvin, Evelyn (Derrick) Steven, Calvin, Alicia, and Alisha; great grandchildren, LaToi, Keith, Desiree, Timothy, James, Jaydyn and Sariah; and great great grandchildren DaVaughn,, Arianna, Rylie, Leah-Jai, Aaron, Carter, Cameran, and Rian. She was known as Aunt Evelyn, Mama, Grandma, and Mother Lucas to many extended family members and friends.
Her home going was at Liberty Baptist Church on Greenfield Road in Detroit, Michigan and her final resting place is Detroit Memorial Park East.
