Heinerich (Henricus) "Henry" (Heyd) Heidt was born on Jan. 13, 1795, in/near the little village of Trimbach in the NE corner of Bas-Rhin, Alsace , France, about 10 miles from the border of France and Germany. Separated only from western Germany by the Rhine River, the native language for many of Alsace's citizens in the 1800s was German. Today, the population of Trimbach is about 575.

Heinerich's French surname was probably spelled Heyd, however, in America it was spelled several ways (Hite, Heid, Heil, Hiedt, Heit, etc.). In Henry's case, it appears that his English surname was spelled "Heidt" most of the time. The surname on his broken headstone is difficult to read but appears to be "Heidt". His German given name is shown on his headstone as Heinerich, however, like his father he went by the English name of Henri or Henry.

Henry's parents were probably Heinricus "Henri" Heyd (1764-1826) and Madeleine Dissel (1773-1848). Both were born in the area of present day Bas-Rhin in Alsace, France where they married, lived and died.

Henry, his wife and three daughters (Lena, Eva & Francisca) immigrated from France to America arriving in New Orleans on Nov. 13, 1854. Their port of departure was Le Havre, France , sailing (most likely steerage) on the ship "Creole". After taking a steamboat (again probably steerage) up the Mississippi River and then up the Ohio River they eventually settled on a farm located outside of Louisville, KY on present day Arnoldtown Road in SW Jefferson County.

Making the long trip with Henry was his brother-in-law, Francois Joseph Stoltz (1811-1893) and his family, also from Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France. Joseph's wife, Maria Anna, was Henry's oldest daughter. Their three children (Leo 6, Henry 4 & Charles 1) came with them. Once arriving in Louisville, KY they eventually settled near each other in SW Jefferson County. Sons, Andrew Heidt and Anthony Heidt, did not make the voyage with their parents. Apparently, they were already in America. There is some question as to whether or not they were actually sons, that they were nephews. Possible, but unknown.

Henry, a farmer, had married Maria Anne "Mary" Werner (1799-1868) on Nov. 12, 1821 in Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France. He was 26, she 22. Maria was born in/near the village of Seltz in Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France. Only 5 miles separates the villages of Trimbach and Seltz. Like her husband, Maria's parents are uncertain but may have been Francois Joseph Werner (1762-1831) and Marguerite Wahl (1770-1826), both of whom were born in/near Alsace, France, where they lived and died.

Henry and Maria were married for about 47 years and had six known children. Most likely they had other children who died in infancy or who did not survive childhood. Their known children, all born in/near Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France, were Maria Anne "Annie" Heidt (1822-1900), Andrew Heidt (abt 1823- ?), Anthony Heidt (1830-bet 1900/10), Maleana "Lena" Heidt (1834-1910), M. Eva Heidt (1838- bet 1860/65) and Francoise "Frances" Heidt (1842-1925). Again, it is uncertain if Andrew and Anthony were actually sons of Henry and Maria. It's possible that they were nephews.

Henry's daughters, Lena and Frances, married brothers. Lena married Adam Weber (1828-1910) on Feb. 4, 1856. About five years later, Frances married Johann Joseph "John" Weber (1831-1888) on Feb. 11, 1861. The Weber and Heidt families lived near each other and both attended the St. Andrew Catholic Church. Both couples were married in that church.

Maria died in Jefferson Co., KY on Oct. 3, 1868 at the age of 69. She is buried in the St. Andrew Cath. Cemetery which was then next to the St. Andrew Cath. Church, now razed. The cemetery is located in Jefferson Co., KY on present day St. Anthony Church Rd.

The old stone church building, built about 1849, was one of the first rural Catholic churches built in Jefferson County. It was founded by/for German speaking German and French immigrants. The church disbanded about 1907 but the 100+ year old building was not razed until about 1958. A pavilion in memory of aborted babies now stands on the exact spot where the church once stood.

Henry died on Oct. 1, 1878, about ten years after his wife, at the age of 83. He too, is buried in the St. Andrew Cemetery, next to his wife, Maria. Three of his known daughters (Maria, Lena & Frances) are also buried in the St. Andrew Cemetery.

Son (?), Anthony, is thought to be buried in St. Andrew in a grave that is now unmarked. The burial site of daughter, M. Eva Heidt, is currently unknown. She married Andrew Gerhardstein (1821-1871) in 1858 and made her home in Butler Co., KY, dying between 1860-65. At the time of their marriage Andrew was 37, Eva 19.

It is interesting to note that Henry's headstone, as well as those of his wife and daughter, Maria, is inscribed in German, the native language of the Heidt family.
