He enlisted Sept. 8, 1863 as a Union soldier in the Civil War and was wounded. His ankle was shattered and about 20 years later, had to be amputated.

His first wife was Lavinia and they had two sons. Lavinia died in St. Stephen Canada before he could bring her to Wisconsin. One son Harris died young. The other son John Franklin joined him in Wisconsin around 1892.

He married Ida Marshall October 20, 1892. He worked in the woods.
